Finding and training your future stars

A year to reflect and celebrate

Do you remember Madonna’s hit, Like A Prayer? It topped the charts in March 1989 and stayed there until April, just before Starting Off opened its doors to make a difference to young people and businesses of Northamptonshire. Since then we’ve grown considerably; did you know that we have placed over 6,000 trainees into office based apprenticeships with hundreds of businesses across Northamptonshire? Many of those have specifically recruited for a company.

So, this year we are celebrating 30 years in business and have a range of activities planned, including a series of campaigns and events showcasing current and past apprentices.

Later this month we are running the Starting Off Certificate presentation where our apprentices graduate with their achievement certificates. Our guest speaker is a former apprentice, Reece Minards, who completed a level 2 Business Administration apprenticeship with us and now works as an Account Manager at energy service provider, Online Direct.

Reece progressed after training to become an Account Manager and in 2018 won the prestigious Apprentice of the Year award at the Northamptonshire Business Awards. His success has been down to his dedication, attitude and development in his role.

National Apprenticeship Week is one week dedicated to celebrating, promoting and realising the importance of apprenticeships and their impact. This movement sees employers, providers, partners and apprentices themselves grasp the opportunity to be involved and celebrate success.

Alongside our certificate presentation, we also have several school visits planned in where we will be visiting local education centres to enhance their knowledge of apprenticeships.

This year, National Apprenticeship Week also coincides with National Careers Week; in our Northampton and Kettering training centres we are running sessions for our trainees relating to life after their apprenticeships and future careers.

We have been working closely with our apprentices and employers to improve their learning and understanding. Inspired by a talk I recently attended where apprentices at Mercedes AMG recalled how they enjoy cookery classes as part of their Engineering Apprenticeship. Starting Off are now running a series of workshops focused on wellbeing and resilience.

At Starting Off we are dedicated to giving our apprentices a meaningful experience that focuses on not just achieving academically but enabling them to gain the personal development to be well rounded employees and individuals – whilst National Apprenticeship Week highlights and celebrates this, these values we uphold at every point of the journey and beyond.
