Training our future talent
This month we are celebrating our work with accountants across Northamptonshire!
Taking on staff under the Accounting Apprenticeship scheme has reaped rewards for many practices across the county as staff learn the basics through AAT Level 2, before progressing onto Level 3 and Level 4 and then the higher qualifications such as ACCA, ACA and CTA.
Elsby & Co Chartered Accountants
At Elsby & Co based in Sywell, we have trained 3 of their current staff. Ben Matthews completed his AAT Level 4 over 10 years ago with Starting Off before progressing onto ACCA and is now a partner in the business. Ben now has his own apprentice who has just started his Level 4 and Elsbys have also taken on another of Starting Off’s alumni as a Trainee Accountant.
“AAT is a fantastic route for anyone wanting a career in accountancy. At Elsby & Co we fully support our new trainees through AAT. The different levels progressively build skills and theoretical knowledge which helps staff with the practical application of accountancy required for them to progress in the business”.

Four members of staff at Moore Stephens in Corby have trained with Starting Off. Jen Arber finished her AAT Level 4 in 2011 and then completed ACCA. She is now an Audit and Accounts Senior. For two of her ACCA exams Jen came first in the world, a reflection on the quality of training for employees who do the AAT route first.
Moore Stephens find using the AAT Apprenticeship route a great way to recruit and support staff who want to get into accountancy.
"Starting Off provide a very professional service in my experience. The periodic updates they provide on how our students are progressing on their course are very thorough and informative. The AAT course provides our trainees with a good introduction to the accounting profession."

Starting Off have a long association with Cobley Desborough in Northampton and have trained 5 of their staff over the past 9 years, 3 of whom have either done or are doing ACCA. Phillippa Martin has been at Cobley Desborough since October 2007 when she started her AAT Level 2. She completed all 3 levels of AAT at Starting Off before going onto ACCA which she completed in 2014. Phillippa has recently sat her final Chartered Institute of Taxation exams. Looking back, she really values the help AAT has been to her career:
“The AAT allowed me to create a solid base for my accountancy career to grow from. It gave me the confidence to not only go on to complete the ACCA, but also to progress further and I am delighted to have now completed my CTA.”
